 ESPONJA
"HYPERVIGIL"
Mama Vynila
2011

*****

Every time I hear Esponja, is a word that always comes to mind: why not sell thousands of albums these guys? This band of noise rock Barcelonesa \ Shoegaze \ indie have an innovative sound in style despite their influences, "HyperVigil" gives us the opportunity to sail with the most varied music, songs reminiscent of Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine to punks issues as permanent paralysis. Songs smooth, hard and dreamy yet also exude creativity and originality. "HyperVigil" turns its back on popular music and shows a group of young musicians who are struggling to leave an indelible mark in the world of Rock Underground.
No one can say that this album is easy to listen and if you're stuck in the world of alternative music styles, but the simplicity of production and arrangements make the album Copper elusive personality, attracting anyone wanting initiated in this indie music or immersed in it. However, Sponge strive to develop a sound chaotic, in which there is always something intentional, nothing loose at random, all voices are linked perfectly to the melody of his music, and the progression of his songs is excellent.
The guitar riffs are unanimous, the battery smells perfection and the songs follow a logical pattern. There is a lot of distorted voices as I would like or deafening screams (Portugal is the exception), but Esponja unleash their rebellious attitude with "Do not count anything," penetrating voices without using any kind of order crumble. The song makes a stellar entrance with a guitar sound that foreshadows the impending cry forceful drum sounds. "HyperVigil" album progresses through the absolute boldly, bombarding me with disturbing sounds that make up a record of nonstop chaos. Leveraging its unpredictability when I first heard "Voom", I found it a very grunge sound in its initial entry with those guitar riffs, establishing a frontal assault with a twisted voice and a fast pace (Who would argue otherwise if the song be sung in English?). The drums and guitar swell until finally let out a cry of pain.As the band pushes through the album, his vision remains the same without changing its identity. If I had to choose the most outstanding personal capacity, would "Fucking Pony" the song that kicks off the album and it sounds more Shoegaze entire disk, or the already mentioned "Voom" and "2-3 am" which Jenny the bat becomes momentarily Kim Gordon and Sonic Youth sound, confirming his adoration for the band New Yorkina. And "The Name of Ages", the song that ends the album and it moves away from what could have been a simple melody, turning the song into a ballad relentless. Changes to the track with different rhythms increase the resistance of the battery of Jenny, taking the direction of the song in their own hands to the final destination. I just love this song!
"HyperVigil" opens a world of fierce guitars and covered with disturbing lyrics. And while there is a song that may sound repetitive and decrease the initial value of the album, I can assure you, there is no bad songs on this album, each song gives us something interesting to discover. Esponja are unsettling and unpredictable. In this album, showing his trademark composition and certainly not an album but very known internationally, we have the pleasure to hear and know we appreciate their values being attracted by the noise rock album that combines innovation.
