 MEMORY TAPES
"GRACE/CONFUSION"
Carpark Records
2012

*****

Memory Tapes may have fathered influences was chill, but they have blown up the traditional barriers of genre to create something unlike anything before. They have built a collection of songs that largely leave the fabric structure. Each song is constantly changing, giving the album a quality of life that usually only occurs in the live performances of the great majority of bands. Topics such as "Follow Me" and the eight-minute "Sheila", are constructed and deconstructed repeatedly in front of you, as if to openly display all the detail of the song.
Even the weakest points of the album are creative. "Thru the Field" is undoubtedly the most typical song chillwave genre, and although the first half can be downright boring, the song finally explodes in a matter of days disco, vocal samples and bright guitar riffs. The issue immediately, "Safety", lives up to its name. The melodies and rhythms are repetitive and insurance, and the few moments of the song are not enough to get us away from boredom.
Luckily, the rest of the album makes up these minor errors. The many different sounds present in almost 40 minutes on the album is huge. Without a list of songs, it would be difficult to guess how many songs on the album. Each song goes through many different phases and tones that are difficult to separate so that sometimes we are a bit blind when an item ends and the other begins. Only one protruding sound painful: Hawk's voice. The effects vary greatly from song to song but her voice sometimes seems too tight. Luckily, the album's vocal sections are relatively few and far between, so well feel more like a charge of instrumentation. Due to the minor role of the voice, its monotony is not a major concern. Lyrically, the album treads familiar ground for all genres of music: anguish, loss, nostalgia and joy. Hawk has a range interesting dissonance, melancholic chords, creating an undeniable tension of a section of a song to another. Memory Tapes have built something to feel honored by nature with Grace / Confusion. Topics with synthesizers and indielectro driven electropop, driven by low to provide all the excitement and few get within the genre. They can be a bit schizophrenic to some, but there is no denying the album serves its purpose: to create a truly enjoyable ride for the listener. If you like Tame Impala or Toy: I love this album.
